Mindful skincare in Crete: Finding your calm with FISIKA

I came to Crete early August with 2 children, a suitcase full of everyone’s life, and a simple plan: see the grandparents, enjoy summer, work.

I live in northern Greece with my family, running my second business there. August is perhaps my only chance to return to Crete, be at my mom’s home, spend time with her and let the kids have that beautiful, endless summer with their grandparents.

Of course, I also work when I come to Crete. I’m Maria, Filio’s daughter and co‑founder of FISIKA, so switching off completely isn’t easy. There are always emails, ideas, things to check, something happening at the shop.

But the last couple of days, I gave myself permission to do something rare: to stop trying to make every moment productive and allow me to pause. And that’s when I noticed how tired I really was.

“I’ll just do it quickly.”

It’s a sentence many of us know too well. I’ll just answer this message. I’ll just finish this task before I sit down. I’ll just put my face cream quickly on during that call. And suddenly, the day is gone.

Even when the night comes that I finally have 5 minutes to myself, my mind is already racing ahead. Especially as a mother, it feels like someone always needs something, even when no one’s asking, your brain keeps running the list: meals, shoes, emails, activities, snacks, sunscreen, tomorrow’s plans.

And somewhere in the middle of all that comes the quiet thought: I haven’t done anything for myself today.

But lately, I am feeling this change. Maybe it’s the slower mornings, or watching my children spend hours in Filio’s garden and at the beach. Maybe it’s sitting outside in the evening, eating fruit straight from the tree, and not knowing what time it is.

August in Crete reminded me that I’d been moving too fast. And I start to wonder: what if I don’t need the quiet-house-time, the me-alone-time, the perfect self‑care routine? What if I just stop rushing the small things I already do?

I started with my skin.

Not because skincare solves everything, but because it’s something I already do. I wash my face. I put face cream on. So instead of doing it in 5 seconds and go, I gave myself today a few extra minutes. I massaged my face slowly, noticed how my skin felt, and breathed. 3 minutes, that’s all. 3 minutes where nobody needed anything from me.

Oh! And I had my own little FISIKA moment!

Just two days ago, I let Maria K. take care of me. If you’ve visited FISIKA, you may know her she’s usually the one welcoming visitors and giving skincare sessions. This time, as soon as she saw me entering the store without the kids, she sat me down and said it was my turn for a little care.

I washed my face gently as she guided me. She applied the toner, the serum and the cream slowly, massaging rather than rushing. And in that quiet moment, I felt what it means when someone says, without words: You don’t have to do anything right now. I’ve got you.

It lasted only a few minutes, but I softened. My shoulders dropped. My mind quieted. And yes, my skin felt lovely, but that wasn’t the most important part.

I felt calmer, more present, less like I was chasing the next thing.

We often make self‑care sound complicated, as if it requires a perfect routine, a quiet house, or an hour to ourselves. And if we can’t have all that, we postpone it.

But maybe self‑care can be smaller. Maybe it’s putting cream on your hands and actually feeling the muscles on your fingers. Maybe it’s sitting in the garden with your coffee, without your phone. Maybe it’s letting someone else look after you for 3 minutes. Or maybe taking care of yourself doesn’t have to be another task, just a moment you allow yourself to enjoy.

Your skin can be your pause.

That’s one reason I love FISIKA’s skincare line. You don’t need a complicated routine, just a small amount of cream, warmed between your fingers and massaged slowly into your skin.

The TREAT Nourishing cleansing bar is rich, made to bring softness and comfort.

The TONER lavender hydrosol to balance the skin and let deep breaths in.

The RELIEVE multi-use baby oil, calms dry or itchy skin and eases the mind a bit.

And REVIVE, our lavender‑based face cream, is designed to be massaged in enjoying a grounding moment, not rush.

The products matter. But the way you use them matters more.

Give yourself a little pause.
