The route stop by stop
1. Start the day with bougatsa in Chania
Where: Chania Town, Apokoronou Street.
Suggested time: Around 7:00–8:00 am
Before getting on the road, start the day the Cretan way: with bougatsa.
Two well-known places to try are Bougatsa Iordanis and Bougatsa Chanion, both on Apokoronou Street.
Bougatsa is made with thin, crispy layers of pastry and can be filled with creamy mizithra cheese or sweet custard. If you want to try it the Cretan way, order the cheese version with a little sugar on top. The combination of salty cheese and sweet sugar is surprisingly good.
Why kids love it
It is warm, crispy, sweet and easy to share. It also makes breakfast feel like the beginning of an adventure rather than just another meal.
Our family memory
I have been starting my mornings with bougatsa for as long as I can remember. It is one of those tastes that takes me straight back to childhood. My own children loved trying the cheese version with sugar on top. They were fascinated by the idea that the same pastry could be both salty and sweet.
Tip: Starting early is worth it, especially in summer. The roads around Chania become much busier later in the morning, and you will enjoy the outdoor parts of the day more before the strongest heat.
2. Walk through the Botanical Garden of Crete
Where: Fournes, Chania
Suggested time: Around 9:00 am
From Chania, drive towards Fournes and spend the morning at the Botanical Park & Gardens of Crete.
This is where the day starts to feel like an adventure.
The garden stretches across the slopes of the White Mountains, with paths surrounded by herbs, flowers, fruit trees and plants from different parts of the world. There are also animals, a small lake and plenty of places to stop and rest. There are shaded areas, beautiful views and a restaurant where you can stop for lunch when everyone starts getting hungry.
Why kids love it
There is always something new to notice. They can smell herbs, look for ducks, listen for peacocks, discover unusual fruit and see plants that may be completely different from the ones they know at home.
Our family memory
This is where my children learned the names of some Cretan herbs. They still talk about the giant banana trees and, for some reason, have never forgotten the sound of the peacocks. One of my favourite things about visiting with children is watching them notice things you would probably walk straight past yourself.
Tip: Instead of simply walking through the garden, give young children a small challenge: Can you find three different flowers? Can you spot a bird? Which plant has the biggest leaves? What is the strangest fruit you can find?
Suddenly, a walk becomes a treasure hunt.
Ps. The walking route is around 2.5 km, so comfortable shoes are a good idea.
3. Make your own soap at FISIKA’s Experience Yard
Where: Gerani village, Chania
Suggested time: Around 12:00–2:00 pm
Booking recommended
After a morning outdoors, it is time to make something with your hands.
At FISIKA’s Experience Yard in Gerani, families can join our Creative Soap Workshop and create their own little soap designs.
Children work with soap dough, mix colours and shape it into whatever their imagination comes up with. And yes, they are allowed to get their hands messy.
Why kids love it
Because this isn’t an activity where they sit and watch someone else do something.
They touch, mix, shape and create. And at the end, they have something they made themselves to take home.
Our family memory
The Experience Yard is very close to our hearts. My children love mixing the colours, playing with the soap dough and listening to the stories while we work.
For us, the best part is not making a perfect soap. It is watching everyone slow down, get creative and enjoy doing something together. That is what we hope our visitors feel here too.
The best souvenir might be the one you make
Imagine getting home from your holiday and your child showing someone their little soap and saying:
“I made this in Crete!” That is the kind of souvenir we love.
Not something you simply picked up from a shelf. Something you made.
Want to add the workshop to your day?
You can book the Creative Soap Workshop at FISIKA in Gerani and make it your midday stop between the Botanical Garden and Lake Agia.

4. Look for turtles and birds at Lake Agia
Where: Agia Lake
Suggested time: Around 5:00 pm
After lunch and some creative time, head to Lake Agia.
This freshwater lake is a lovely place to slow down for the afternoon. It is surrounded by greenery and is home to birds, ducks, geese, frogs, turtles and fish.
You don’t need a big plan here. Just walk towards the water and start looking.
Then stop at Enasma Bistrot for coffee and snacks.
Why kids love it
Because there is always something moving. Can you spot a turtle? How many ducks can you count? Can you hear a frog? What is that huge fish doing near the edge? Children naturally turn it into a game.
Our family memory
We always run towards the water to look for the turtles. Then we walk towards the bridge, see what else we can spot and eventually end up sitting by the lake enjoying ice cream. It is one of those simple stops that children remember.
Tip: From Enasma, walk to the right taking the path all around the lake. The path is unfinished and now ends a little bit after the half of the lake. Then you need to return backwards to Enasma- a great spot for food and coffee!
5. Finish the day with sunset and gelato in Chania
Where: Talo square & the western side of the Venetian Harbour of Chania
Suggested time: Around 8:00 pm
Now head back to Chania. By this point, everyone will probably have tired legs, slightly messy hair and plenty of stories from the day.
Park around Talos Square and walk towards the western side of the Venetian Harbour around sunset. Stop for a gelato at Domenico Handcrafted Gelato & Coffee.
Take your time. Watch the harbour change colour, let the children choose their favourite flavour and enjoy the evening without having anywhere else to be.
Our family memory
This part of Chania is special to me. I remember Talo Square as the place where we had one of our first little family date nights after our first child was born.
I remember the sunset turning pink and peach-orange over the water and everything feeling unexpectedly soft and peaceful.
It is one of those moments when you realise that Chania isn’t only somewhere you visit. It becomes part of your memories.
A few things to know before taking this route
🚗 You will need a car.
This route connects several places outside Chania Town.
👟 Wear comfortable shoes.
The Botanical Garden and Agia Lake involve walking, and you’ll want to be comfortable throughout the day.
💧 Bring water.
Especially if you’re travelling during the warmer months.
🧢 Don’t forget sun protection.
Hat, sunscreen and sunglasses will make the outdoor parts much more enjoyable.
🕐 Don’t try to follow the timetable too strictly.
The times above are a guide, not a race. If your children are fascinated by creating their own soaps, stay longer. If everyone needs a slower lunch, take it.
