Hike to the legendary cave overlooking iconic Zorbas beach

Welcome to the “Sight” section of our blog, where we’re diving into the breathtaking beauty of Crete’s hidden treasures. Today, we’re guiding you to an interesting hike at the legendary Lera Cave, and the view over Stavros Beach in Chania, Crete.

Let’s talk about the camel-shaped cliff, Mount Vardies, the iconic backdrop to one of Greece-related cinema’s most iconic moments. Remember Zorba’s famous dance in the film “Zorba the Greek”? Well, guess what – that scene was filmed right here in Stavros in 1964. A walk at the sandy beach Stavros can add a touch of movie glamor to your evening in this little corner of paradise!

Cave Lera is on top of the cliff, overlooking the famous dance location. Named after the chieftain Stephanos Leras who once roamed these lands, this cave is steeped in history and mystery. From ancient inscriptions to impressive stalagmites, Lera Cave has hosted many civilizations that have called Crete home. It has been used for worshiping from the Neolithic to the Byzantine period, with the important findings being the inscriptions of the Classical period mentioning the worship of god Pan and the Nymphs. You can find more details at cretanbeaches.com and everything you need to know before you go!

The hike up is tricky but the view is stunning. Crystal blue waters, golden sandy beaches, and a panoramic scene that stretches as far as the eye can see are waiting for you! It’s the kind of view that dreams are made of, my friend.

Now, I won’t sugarcoat it – getting to Lera Cave is no walk in the park. The hike up is not for the faint-hearted, but trust me when I say the reward is worth every drop of sweat. Just be sure to watch your step on the way down – those sharp rocks can be a bit unforgiving!

So what are you waiting for? Lace up your hiking boots, grab your camera, and prepare for an adventure of a lifetime. Whether you’re an ancient Greece history lover, a nature lover, or just in it for the views, Lera Cave has something for everyone.

Until next time, happy hiking!
